The Challenge
- Over 1,300 homeless individuals sleep in shelters and on the streets of Greater Cincinnati
- Poor living conditions, inadequate nutrition, extreme weather and limited healthcare lead to serious health conditions for this population
- Shelters and treatment programs are unable to accommodate homeless individuals with acute illness or injuries
- Hospitals cannot provide extended post-treatment care to homeless patients.
- Homeless individuals have unresolved health conditions leading to repeat emergency room visits and hospital stays at tremendous cost to local hospitals and our community
- Homeless individuals are frequently discharged from hospitals with unaffordable prescriptions, and unobtainable follow-up care
The Solution
- The proven national trend in closing the gap between hospitals and the streets is medical respite services for homeless persons
- Our mission is to bridge that gap by providing quality, holistic medical care to homeless individuals who need a safe place to heal, while assisting them in breaking the cycle of homelessness
Cost Effective Common Sense
- Respite Care has served over 1100 clients
- CRC is the only agency in Cincinnati offering respite care to homeless individuals
- Last year over 125 clients received medical care and shelter
- Respite Care prevented the re-hospitalization of 85% of its clients for unresolved health conditions or complications
- Average length of stay is 28 days
- The cost is only 5% of the cost of a hospital day
- Almost 90% of Respite Care clients were placed into permanent or transitional housing and treatment facilities upon discharge
- Over 75% of those clients remained in permanent housing with an income at exit
These statistics equate to over $10M in savings to local hospitals and our community
